A New Year for New Opportunities

Well, 2011 is over and 2012 has begun.  I have my doubts about the whole Mayan Calendar thing, but if it is true then there is a lot to still be accomplished before Dec. 21, 2012.  As a fruit grower, you should be concerned with several things at this time of year — creating a monthly plan for the upcoming season, pruning, and education are just a few of those.  No matter what crop you grow, you need to know how and when to apply fertilizer, spray herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides, and keep abreast of the latest issues/problems that might occur.  Do you have a disaster plan?  Here in S. MS, hurricanes are a way of life.  What is your plan?  While I was in OK we had our share of disasters to deal with and I found many growers unprepared.  Think ahead to what could possibly happen, develop a plan of action, and determine how it will affect your business.  Knowing what you know is not good enough, you must go beyond and continue to learn and anticipate.
