Producer Advisory Council meeting at CREC

Yesterday at the MSU Coastal Research and Extension Center (CREC) we held the 5th annual Producer Advisory Council Meeting.  I facilitated the fruit section of the meeting.  Last year we had 12 participants, but this year, even with poor weather, we had 23 participants.  It was an enlightening and successful meeting.  Some of the highlights that we brought out:

  • More publications and research needed on nutritional values of fruits and vegetables (including recipes, comparison of fresh vs shipped, etc.)
  • Assist growers and producers gain access to the MS Farm-to-School program
  • Programs on how to sell produce to restaurants
  • Consistent reporting of chill hours throughout the state
  • Publications and research on pomegranate production
  • More information and research on citrus for the coastal areas
  • Research on alternative fruit crops
  • Involvement of Extension in “growing more farmers”
  • Food safety programs

These are some of the topics we touched on in our 1.5 hour session.  If you could not attend, or did not know about the meeting, please consider attending next year — just send me your contact info.  Just because you were not there doesn’t mean you can’t provide input — leave a message here and I will make sure it gets noted.  Thanks for your input — MSU works to assist the people of Mississippi and we need your guidance. See the photo below for a glimpse of the meeting.
